Spyderco 2018 Production Sample – Paul Alexander Parata

March 5, 2018

Paul Alexander keeps on designing cool new knives for Spyderco. We got a sneak peek at the Parata concept model last year, and it’s always amazing to see the refined production sample.  The Parata is the first knife to feature a stop lock. What is usually a stop in in other folding knives, has now become the lock. This location also makes it a very safe lock/knife to use. It’s hard to accidentally disengage. The handle also features two small liners that connect the pins and add strength to the handle. Another nice feature is that this lock design allow for plenty of space inside the handle, hence the huge blade – compared to the handle size. The blade shape should work well for all kinds of rotational cutting.

Spyderco 2017 Production Sample – Paul Alexander Design

I think Spyderco did mention a name for this design at the SHOT show. However, I think it turned out that name was already taken, so this design -for now- seems to be known as the ‘Paul Alexander Design’. Alexander also designed the excellent Ouroboros, and this folders seems the be its bigger and flipable brother. It recall it being an exceptionally lightweight design, compared to its size. We had a little snafu weighing this knife, so I can’t give an indication of the knife’s weight. Sorry about that.

Blade Length: 9 cm / 3.54 inches

Click here for a more detailed look at the Spyderco Peter Alxander Ouroboros production sample.

Last February, Spyderco organized the 12th annual ‘Amsterdam Meet’ in, you guessed it, Amsterdam the Netherlands. During the meet, Spyderco’s Eric Glesser presented many new concept models, prototypes and production samples that Spyderco is working on. Around 80 knifeknuts attended meet and they were asked for feedback and opinions on the new designs.

This year, we used a live videolink to a big screen, so the entire audience could get a closer look at the various details of the knife during Eric’s presentation. This clip is taken from that videolink. I hope you understand that this was not a purpose-made video presentation, but rather a taped portion of a live presentation. Nevertheless this video offers a nice first look at a new Spyderco design and its backstory.

The Ouroboros did remind me of the Dialex designed Junior folder, but the Ouroboros has its own character. It’s a very light design, that folds up in a nice small oval little package. This should make the knife a great EDC design. The handle and choil make for a big grip, guys with big hands should have no problem with this compact folder.
