Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Byrd Harrier

March 27, 2019

The Byrd Harrier in G10 is another great way to catch the Spyderco Bug on a budget. Knife snobs might scoff at its ‘made in China’ label and its ‘lesser blade steel’. However, back in the mid- to late 1990s, this would have probably been considered a premium factory knife.

The quality is impressive. And I can tell from handling that the Byrd Harrier will make a great working knife. One you wouldn’t mind scuffing up. I’m the first to admit that I do think about what I’m doing with my more expensive Spyderco knives. So keeping a budget option around makes sense. Who knows, perhaps the Byrd knives see more actual ‘hard use’ cutting than more expensive knives?

This is the last knife I can show you from this year’s meet, and I’m done for today. However, my report on the Spyderco Amsterdam Meet isn’t finished yet…

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – BaliYo

March 27, 2019

I was happy to see the BaliYo getting an upgrade at this year’s Amsterdam Meet. If you like knives, you’ll probably like balisongs as well, or at least played with one. A BaliYo takes the game of the balisong knife and it puts it in a pen. My co-workers might not always appreciate the clickety-clack of me flipping a pen during meetings, but a BaliYo never bores me.

The most noticeable new feature of the new BaliYo are the wider arms with slots, to improve the grip during tricks. However, the wire clips have also been tuned, they are now less likely to catch on threads in your pocket and they won’t move as much as the old ones. The arms appeared thicker as well, offering even more protection against breaking. It looks like the new BaliYo will be part of the Lightweight series. This one’s absolutely on my wish list!

Specifications
Overall Length: 20  cm / 7.87 inches
Pen Length: 10,6  cm / 4.17 inches
Closed Length: 10,8 cm / 4.25 inches
Weight: 34 grams / 1.2 ounces

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Native Chief

March 27, 2019

I have to say that the Native Chief was my favorite of the new knives that Spyderco showed at the meet. Call it nostalgia, as I remember seeing that concept design on the forums back in 1999 or so. This was back in the day, when you had to put a knife on a flatbed scanner, cover it with a cloth and you had a digital image you could share online! That first design was added to the wonderful mini-museum display of the native in the Spyderco Factory Outlet. The current Native Chief flows from the current Native 5 design, and features linerless G-10 handle construction and everything else you’re familiar with on a G-10 Native five, just a lot longer!

This knife felt very light and solid in the hand. It felt lighter and thinner than the Emphasis. The Native Chief’s long slender blade also reminded me of a large Calypso. I can’t wait to get my hands on my own production sample of the native Chief, it’s very high on my wish list!

Specifications
Overall Length: 23,1 cm / 9.09 inches
Blade Length: 10,4 cm / 4.09 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11 inches
Weight: 111 grams / 3.9 ounces

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Sage 5 Lightweight

March 26, 2019

I made a rookie mistake when ‘judging’ the new Sage 5 Lightweight, I went by its looks. The new grip pattern looked different, and therefore a bit ‘wrong’. Then I picked up the knife, and ‘got it’. Are you familiar with the grip effect on the FRN pattern slipits, like the UK Penknife, Urban or Squeak? Did you notice how the pattern feel smooth when you move your fingers ‘up and down’ on the handle? And how it gets very tacky when you move ‘forward’ towards the blade? Imagine that effect times ten, and that is how this handle pattern feels -to me- on the new Sage 5 lightweight.

Eric shared at the meet how Spyderco wanted to make lightweight compression locks for a long time. It required the introduction of new polymers to make it a reality. A compression lock exerts a lot of force on the handle, and this new lightweight stuff can take it. Personally, I’m not the world’s biggest Sage fan, but I can certainly get into many other famous Spyderco compression lock folders in a lightweight format!

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Emphasis

March 26, 2019

The Spyderco Emphasis is kind of a larger version of the Efficient. So with the Efficient, Small Efficient and the Emphasis, you got a nice trio of value folders. The Emphasis handled heavier but well balanced, compared to the Small Efficient. It also looked and handled a lot like another large G10 handled knife I get to show you in a later post.

Specifications
Overall Length: 21 cm / 8.26 inches
Blade Length: 9,1 cm / 3.58 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11 inches
Weight: 136 grams / 4.8 ounces

I have no information on pricing or specific release dates.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Small Efficient

March 26, 2019

The small efficient is, simply put, a smaller version of the efficient. As is usual for Spyderco, the ‘cockpit area’ (the area of the knife covering roughly the pivot, choil and opening hole) seemed the same size. The blade and back of the handle are shortened to achieve a smaller version of the same knife, but with proper ergonomics. This small efficient was indeed a ‘fist full of small knife’. It reminded me of the Dice versus the larger Domino.

Specifications
Overall Length: 15,4 cm / 6.06 inches
Blade Length: 6,3 cm / 2.48 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11 inches
Weight: 105 grams / 3.7 ounces

I have no information on pricing or specific release dates.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Dragonfly 2 Wharncliffe

March 25, 2019

The wharncliffe Spyderco Delica was popular enough to bring out an Endura with a big ‘wharnie’ blade, and now we can look forward to a Dragonfly 2 with a wharncliffe blade. Personally, I prefer the ‘wharnie’ in a smaller blade. An original Kiwi has been my office folder for over 10 years now. I’ll definitely add this lil’ big wharncliffe to my everyday carry rotation!

Specifications
Overall Length: 14,1 cm / 5.56 inches
Blade Length: 5,7 cm / 2.25 inches
Blade Thickness: 2.5 mm / 0.09 inches
Weight: 34 grams / 1.2 ounces

I have no information on pricing or specific release dates.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Dragonfly 2 Emerson Opener

March 25, 2019

When the sun’s out and the shorts come out, there’s a Dragonfly clipped to my pocket. They’re as easy to carry as pocket lint, and boy do they cut! You might not realize it, but with regular XL sized hands you can get a full grip on this little folder, and it’s very practical. Living in an urban area, a Dragonfly can take care of any practical cutting chore. This emerson opener variant is great if you like that thick spined spear point tip, and also of course if you’re looking for a quick opening ‘let go device’.

Specifications
Overall Length: 14,1 cm / 5.56 inches
Blade Length: 5,7 cm / 2.25 inches
Blade Thickness: 2.5 mm / 0.09 inches
Weight: 37 grams / 1.3 ounces

I have no information on pricing or specific release dates.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Endela

March 25, 2019

As the name implies, the Endela is the size in between the Delica and Endura. I guess the SKU number should be C10.5? This is not just a ‘shrunken’ or ‘enlarged’ blade, depending on your perspective. The grip and blade have both been redesigned to be an intermediate size between the Delica and Endura.  The Endura doesn’t fit my hands, and I always preferred the R or Stretch ergonomically. The Endela fits my hands just as nicely as my Stretch. I hope this design does well, to warrant cool colors and steels. I think I might want to hold out for such a variation.

Specifications
Overall Length: 20,5 cm / 8.07 inches
Blade Length: 8,6 cm / 3.38 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11 inches
Weight:  88 grams / 3.1 ounces

I have no information on pricing or specific release dates.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Police 4 Lightweight

March 25, 2019

I certainly didn’t see this design coming, the Police 4 with a lightweight FRN handle. This knife is all sorts of long, slender and light weight. I can imagine you’d forget you’d carry this knife, it’s that light for its size.  If I recall correctly, the blade steel on the lightweight will (also) be K390 (UPDATE: according to Spyderco: “The P4 LW will be VG-10. We’re also planning K390 (Midnight blue) & ZDP (BRG) in the future.”). Fit and finish were spot on. I hope they’ll make a serrated one, so I can retire my G10 Police 4 as a travel folding bread knife.

Specifications
Overall Length: 25,4 cm / 10 inches
Blade Length: 11,1 cm / 4.37 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11  inches
Weight: 119 grams / 4.2 ounces
