Spyderco 2012 Prototype – Laci Szabo Folder

The Szabo folder is still in development. The most striking change is the handle material. Another challenge with this huge folder is the self-close mechanism that works separately from the lock.

Spyderco is now considering using a new type of carbon fiber, inspired by ‘lightning strike carbon fiber’.  This concept was originally designed by Boeing for use in airplane parts. By weaving strands of metal in with the carbon fiber, the material becomes better protected against…lighting strikes. This is likely not lightning strike CF but ‘Golden Carbon Fiber’. It sure looks striking. The folder was designed as an MBC folder that complements Laci’s method of reverse grip knife fighting.

This one is a real beauty, perhaps my favorite that you have shown off thus far! Lighting strike CF is a cool material but I understand that it’s also expensive. I’m hoping this one comes in around $130 retail, but that could be asking for too much. Either way it’s a beautiful knife. I am very excited about this one.

  4. Really love this model and appreciate the insight on it thus far. Looks like the knife will be available in the next 5-6 months. BladeHQ has the closest hint to pricing putting the retail at $299.99 , they will likely list near 240$. Hope this is of some help, and despite the price, still looking forward to owning one for my every day concealed carry.

    JIMPING????

    • I don’t remember any jimping on the prototype, but this folder really doesn’t need it for grip. It’s profile provides pleny of grip alone. Furthermore, it’s catered to Szabo’s style of MBC which favors reverse grip and point techniques. Incidentally, renowned MBC instructor Michael Janich doesn’t care for jimping either, it’s gone from the Yojimbo 2. He explained that for his techniques and preffered grip, it could hurt his thumb and compromise a good grip during a fight.
